Alex

Turned out that Keo had gone AWOL. Literally, no one at the Four Seasons knew where to find him. Ozzie tried calling him but got voicemail. We stuck around the resort a while, talked to a few staff members, but they were either unaware of his whereabouts or damn good liars.

Most were young and oblivious, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. We left without learning more about Silver Tips and could only hope that Keo would call Ozzie back. Or maybe Nick would come through and find out the name and address of the person who owned the Maserati. I assumed it was also the person Ozzie had dubbed Silver Tips, but anything was possible.

“Woo-hoo!” Erin high-fived Mackenzie. They’d just won the latest round of rummy.

“You cheated,” Luke said, throwing his cards on the kitchen table.

“Hey, partner,” Nicole said to Luke. “They won that round, but you and I did win three of the last four. So...” She smiled, trying to pull Luke out of the doldrums.

“That’s true.” He high-fived Nicole. “The Celtics rule, baby!”

“The Celtics?” Mackenzie asked with her arms splayed, first looking at Luke and then over at Erin.

“Yeah, the squirt—”

“I’m taller than you are now, sista,” Luke said with a chuckle that hit an octave far too low to match his baby face.

“Anyway,” Erin continued with a roll of the eyes, “he can’t do anything without bringing basketball into the equation. It’s like he worships the Celtics. The boy needs to get a life. I tell you, the boy’s totally obsessed over basketball.”

Obsessed. It came out of nowhere and hit me in the gut. Painful memories of my dear Ezzy flashed before my eyes, the kindest, most thoughtful woman that had ever walked the planet. And then of the crazy woman who’d crossed that line of obsession with me and somehow thought that she had to take Ezzy’s life to get my attention.

“You okay, Mom?” Erin said.

“It’s all good.”

She winked at me. “We tennis players have to stick together, right?”

Erin, like me, had grown into a fierce competitor on the court. Still, though, I didn’t want to alienate my son, even if at times he reminded me more of an alien from outer space.

I tried to find common ground. “How about we say family sticks together?”

“Extended family. ‘Ohana’ is what Keo called it,” Nicole said, jumping on the unity bandwagon.

The kids all snickered. “Yeah, sure, whatever,” Luke said.

Nicole and I traded a mocking gaze at that comment. Then we both cracked up for a few seconds.

“What’s the deal with the old people?” Luke said to the other two kids.

“I don’t know. What’s the deal with the teenagers?” I said, leaning over and goosing Luke in the ribs. He flinched like the spaz he can be, and his leg went flying. He clocked Mackenzie right in the nose. She screamed, and blood started pouring out.

“Oh, no! Mackenzie!” I said, jumping to my feet.

Erin grabbed a kitchen towel, and Nicole and I walked Mackenzie to the bathroom.
